Winter registration is now OPEN, so please make sure your rower is registered and ready for our indoor season. This Friday, 11/17, will be the all boathouse clean up. Please encourage your rower to wear clothes that can get dirty and bring extra layers.

The Lost and Found will be donated at the end of the week so it can start over for a new season. Please check for any clothing and water bottles that you may have misplaced before we take it to Homefront! Any Mercer gear will be held so check with Coach Amanda if you cannot find a piece of Nike, Patagonia, or JL clothing. If you have ordered any Nike or Patagonia gear, all pieces are now available for pickup! Please see Coach Amanda before or after practice for pick up, and make sure you have sent a check for Patagonia gear with your rower.

Every exercise the group does will simulate/reinforce the movement patterns we use to move the boat, and each session will include dynamic warm-ups and post-workout stretching.   The erg sessions and strength training sessions will all take place at the boathouse.

Goodbye October, Hello November!

Hello Mercer Family and Friends,

October was an exciting month for PNRA/Mercer! The Head of the Halloween was a great opportunity for our rowers to get in boats and have a fun but competitive start to their weekend. We had NINE mixed line-up boats and two 8th grade boats head out on the water, with the results listed below:

  1. Sneikus- 18:16.1
  2. Weir- 18:20.6
  3. No Name- 18:28.7
  4. J-kow- 18:33.3
  5. Caspersen- 18:42.3
  6. G1- 18:57.6
  7. Merion- 19:07.3
  8. B2- 19:08.7
  9. B3- 19:26.7

There was an incredible spread of treats after the race and we cannot thank the parents who donated goods and helped serve enough!

The Head of the Schuylkill was a successful weekend for our Masters and Novice crews. The Masters came away with a 2nd place finish in the Women’s 60+ Veterans 4+ and a 3rd place finish in the 40-49 Women’s 4+. The other Masters boats performed well taking 5th in both the 50-59 Men’s and Women’s 4+, and 4th in the 27-39 Women’s 4+. It was a perfect, sunny day for racing! The novice had slightly drearier weather; it rained the entire time the rowers were at the course! The team handled the weather well and raced to a 5th and 20th place finish for the girls novice boats out of 43 entries. The boys novice boats placed 19th and 32nd out of a field of 53 boats.

We are still looking for volunteers for the Frostbite and Braxton regattas on Mercer Lake November 11-12. We need stake boat holders for every shift, and a few more launch drivers to fill out the empty slots. The link for the Frostbite is HERE and the Braxton link is HERE. Stake boating is a great way for novice rowers to see how the start of a race will look before they compete on Sunday!

Lastly, there are two Women’s National Team rowers in need of local family housing ASAP! If you are interested, or know someone who may be, please contact Hilary at hgehman@rowpnra.org.

GO MERCER!!!

Charles, Schuylkill, and Halloween!

Hello Mercer friends and family,

Mercer had an extremely exciting weekend at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston! Our Varsity girls took home 5th and 13th out of 85 boats, and our Varsity boys placed 19th out of 85 boats, securing all 3 entries for next year. The Masters women’s 4+ came away from the course in 25th place and the Masters men’s 4+ finished 29th in hotly contested races. The weekend was a perfect example of the universal appeal of rowing across the US, with juniors, colleges, masters, and elite athletes coming together to try their hand at an incredibly difficult course. The sunny conditions made for speedy racing, with an astounding 34 new record times for the Charles!

This weekend our rowers will stay closer to home with the Head of the Halloween on Saturday and the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia. The Head of the Halloween will take place from 10 AM to 1 PM at Mercer Lake, and will be an Around The Lake (ATL) course in mixed boats. ALL athletes are encouraged to attend in costume (that won’t get in the way of rowing) and bring some snacks and cider to share. The Novice rowers who will be competing at the Schuylkill will not be racing but are encouraged to attend to join in on the fun!

Coach Zach and Coach Amanda are beyond excited to be able to bring four Novice boats to the Head of the Schuylkill for the second year in a row. Two boys and two girls boats will try their skill on this 4k course against over 40 other boats in their races! Parents are encouraged to drop off their rower and find the parent tent for a great vantage point along this historic river. Our Masters will be racing Saturday in a women’s 8+, three women’s 4+s, and a men’s 4+. They are looking to build upon their success at the Navy Day regatta held on the Schuylkill earlier this month! A small fee is associated with this race, so look for a registration link coming soon.

Come down to the boathouse or the Schuylkill to be apart of a fantastic weekend of racing!

GO MERCER!!!

One More Month of Fall Rowing!

Hello Mercer friends and family,

There will be NO PRACTICE this Friday and Sunday for all teams (10/20 and 10/22). Please look for instructions from your coach about alternate workouts for these days! Our coaching staff will largely be in Boston racing/coaching boats at the Head of the Charles, so check out the live stream for the weekend here.

This week, please encourage your rower(s) to check the lost and found box in the erg room. We will be donating the clothing to Home Front on Monday (10/23). The coaches are also finding numerous plastic water bottles around the boathouse after practices. We want to encourage rowers to bring reusable nalgenes or water bottles to practice with their names written on them to help prevent waste.

This weekend was a successful showing for the Masters Team at the Navy Day regatta! The women’s 8+ won their division and was the fastest Masters 8+ on the water the whole day! The women’s 4+ also won their division and was the second fastest 4+ of the day. Their next race will be at the Head of the Charles this weekend and will feature a women’s and men’s 4+. Good luck!

Patagonia orders will be accepted until Wednesday night so please see this blog post for a link to the order form! Our Nike gear should all be in by Friday, with the exception of the Men’s Medium polos (which will be shipping soon). Please remind your rower to pick up his/her gear!

TopGolf tickets are still available for our Fall Fundraiser Event. There will be auction items including private rowing lessons and even a Tuscan Villa! This event is November 19th, and proceeds will be going to our boathouse’s expansion.

PNRA will be hosting a screening of the documentary ‘Dare to Be’ on December 17th at 10 AM. All PNRA friends and family are encouraged to attend this event at the Princeton Garden Theater; tickets will be on sale soon! For more information on the film check out the website.

Head of The Charles Trip Information

Hello, Mercer Varsity Athletes and Parents,

We are looking forward to the second regatta of the season.  The Head of the Charles (www.hocr.org) is a Varsity-only regatta scheduled for Sunday, October 22, in Boston, MA.  This regatta is by invitation only, and this year we are sending the Boys V8, the Girls V8 and 2V8, the Men’s Masters 4+, and the Women’s Masters 4+.  The coaches have posted the lineups.  The current tentative schedule is as follows:

Saturday:
10:29am Men’s Senior Masters 4+
10:47am Women’s Senior Masters 4+

Sunday:
10:06am Women’s Youth 8+ (both entries)
12:45pm Men’s Youth 8+

Travel Plans:
We are departing from the boathouse at 5:30 am Friday, October 20.  Athletes should arrive at the boathouse packed and ready to leave.  They should also bring snacks and water, but the plan is to have lunch on the road.  We will drive directly to the course so the athletes can rig the boats and get in a practice row.  We will be returning to the boathouse on Sunday, October 22, some time in the evening.

We will be traveling in 3 vans, with 4 chaperones (an extra one to be at the course with the athletes while the vans are being parked offsite).  There will be a chaperone assigned to each boat competing at the event.

The cost for this regatta is higher than it is for most other regattas.  This is in large part due to the costs associated with traveling to Boston this weekend; the Head of the Charles is a prestigious regatta that hosts clubs and teams at all levels from all over the world.

The registration link for the Head of the Charles is here.  If you have not yet filled out and signed a Travel Guidelines and Expectations form, please do so and have your athlete return the form to his/her coach by Monday, October 16th.  The link for the form is  here..

We will provide updates on ETA’s, as well as results, on Facebook.  We will do what we can to post on the blog as well, but please use Facebook as your primary source of information.  If you are watching from home, results will also be posted on www.RegattaCentral.com.  You can also follow via livestream from the event website www.hocr.org.

Hotel Details:

PNRA has secured rooms at the Boston Marriott Newton, 2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA  02466 for athletes and coaches.

Meals:

The following meals will be provided:

Lunch Friday, October 20
Dinner Friday, October 20 (choice by boat)
Breakfast Saturday, October 21 (full breakfast at the Hotel)
Dinner Saturday, October 21 (Bertucci’s, an annual tradition)
Breakfast Sunday, October 22 (full breakfast at the Hotel)
Lunch Sunday (at the course)
NOTE: Lunch on Saturday will be at the course.  Athletes will purchase their own.
Dinner on Sunday will be by boat on the way home.  Athletes will purchase their own.
*****  Please have your athlete bring cash for snacks, meals, and event gear.  *****

Coaches’ Travel Note:
The Head of Charles is a unique event.  It is very hard to obtain an entry through the open lottery system.  The only way to avoid the lottery and guarantee an entry for the next year is to finish in the top half of your event.  In 2017, for the third time in the history of the club, Mercer has three guaranteed entries.  The second unique aspect of the Charles is that it is an incredibly difficult course to navigate for a coxswain.  There are a couple of extreme turns, six bridges, and many boats to pass along the way.  Therefore, we want to make sure our coxswains are prepared.  We want to ensure that we have best possible chance of finishing in the top half of each race, so future Mercer rowers have the opportunity to participate at this great event.  We believe it is crucial for us to have the ability to get athletes out on the course for a row on Friday, and have our coxswains attend the coxswains clinic on Saturday, as it will help them be relaxed and prepared for the race on Sunday.

A huge thank you again to everyone who has offered to help.  We look forward to another successful regatta.

Coach Justin

Go, Mercer!

Race Results and Gear Updates!

Hello Mercer friends and family!

Our Varsity and Master’s Teams had great showings at the Head of the Housatonic this last weekend! Some of the highlights include a 1st/2nd finish for our girls’ 2V boats, a close 4th place to our girls’ 1V, and a strong 6th place finish for the boys’ 1V. There will be an additional blog post about the lineups for our next race, the Head of the Charles, coming soon!

Coach Zach and Coach Amanda have decided they will be taking two novice 8s each to the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia, October 29th. They are impressed with the novices’ progress and can’t wait to see their boats in action during this huge race! Both events have over 40 novice boats entered at this time.

Most of our Nike gear has been delivered! Please see Coach Amanda before or after practice to pick up what you ordered. We are still waiting for our men’s MEDIUM pants, women’s MEDIUM sweatshirts, and women’s SMALL pants to be delivered, but they are expected soon. If you ordered anything from JL they will be shipping our team order at the end of October.

Our next gear order will be Patagonia! These items are great as gifts for the holidays (which are fast approaching!) and will be in before our winter break December 20th. The Patagonia order form is a google document that can be found at this LINK.
Please turn in the orders by WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 18th! No late orders will be accepted.

This weekend is our Octoberfest celebration! This is a 21+ event and dinner will be provided. Feel free to bring your favorite adult beverage! Keep in mind our fundraiser at Top Golf, November 19th, tickets are limited.

Mercer is off to a great start this Fall!

September Wrap-up and October Outlook

Hello Mercer families and friends!

With September in the rearview, our teams are turning their attention to the races ahead in October. This weekend will mark the beginning of head race season with 5 varsity boats competing at Head of the Housatonic, in Connecticut. More information about this race has been posted in a previous blog post. Many of our upperclassmen have been taking official visits to colleges, and we look forward to seeing where our seniors will be going next fall!

Our novice squads have been amping up their workouts and completing rigorous erg testing. The novice girls completed a 4k last week and the novice boys finished a 5k last Thursday, not an easy feat! Coach Amanda and Zach are very impressed with the progress they’ve  seen in the novice so far and are looking forward to racing.

Our 8th graders are getting comfortable in the barge and in the octuple, hammering away at both sweeping and sculling. The 8th graders will be participating in the Head of the Halloween, so start working on costumes that won’t get stuck in the sliding boat seats!

Our Masters program gained four new rowers this fall after successful summer Learn to Scull programs. The men’s 4+, women’s 8+, and 4+ will be racing at the Head of the Housatonic this weekend and looking to improve their strong finishes from last year. Their sites are also set on their men’s and women’s 4+s that will be competing at the Head of the Charles, with our men receiving a last-minute bid that they will hope to defend for next year. The women’s 4+ secured a bid last year by less than .2 seconds, so you can imagine how tough this race can be and the excitement over a great finish!

We have lots of events coming up in October:

October 4th @ 6:30 PM- College Night!

  • Hilary Gehman will provide athletes with a roadmap to rowing in college. Although this event is geared toward juniors, all grades are welcome to attend.

October 6-7th– Head of the Housatonic

  • 3 girls varsity and 2 boys varsity boats will compete at this increasingly popular head race in Shelton, CT. Lineups will be posted after practice today, October, 2nd.

October 7-8th– Small Boat Challenge

  • A great opportunity to volunteer and see the sport up close! This race is open to collegiate, juniors, and masters rowers.

October 14th @ 6 PM- Octoberfest

  • This 21+ event is a great way to mingle with other Mercer families, dinner provided. Tickets can be bought here:

October 20-22nd– Head of the Charles Regatta

  • One of largest race in America, held annually in Boston, is the premier head race for rowers of all ages. 2 girls 8+s, a boys 8+, and a women’s masters 4+ will compete at this exciting venue where only the top half of boats in each event have a secure spot for next year’s race.

October 28th @ 10 AM to 1 PM- Head of the Halloween

  • This intra-squad race will mix up athletes from every team as they complete an “Around the Lake” course on Mercer Lake. Costumes are encouraged and snacks will be provided after racing.

October 29th– Head of the Schuylkill

  • Masters and Novice rowers (selected boats will be announced) will compete in this head race in Philadelphia. This is a great event for spectators and will give the novice boats their first taste of competition.

Thanks for reading!

Everyone MUST get their order in by midnight (PST) on 9/19/2017. If you miss the store closing date, you will need to order your uniform as an individual, directly from JL. For individual orders, pricing and shipping will be different than a team purchase. Be sure to check out the FAQ page and the sizing tab if you have any questions regarding sizing and custom measurements.

We are also offering a Nike order that will be due SEPTEMBER 16TH! We will not be accepting late orders. Please check the PDF below to see what we have this fall. *Nike sizing is fairly standard but the sweatpants (M & W) run long and the women’s sweatshirts run small.* For example, I am a women’s small 99% of the time and I fit into a medium sweatshirt perfectly. If you aren’t sure ask a teammate who may have the size you are considering. The colors on the PDF DO NOT reflect the colors we are getting, the actual colors are in the item descriptions. Varsity need a “game day polo” but Novice are not required to purchase anything.

Boathouse Usage

Good afternoon Mercer Junior Parents and Athletes,

This is just a friendly reminder that the boathouse is closed to all Junior athletes. If you are working the camp you are only allowed to use the boathouse for your camp counseling purposes only. The boathouse is still open for all Mercer Alumni.

Thank you for your understanding,

Coach Justin

2017 Club Nationals

Mercer Parents,

Our goal for this Summer Season was to include Club Nationals for all our athletes.  Unfortunately, we are only able to send a limited number of boats to this regatta.  There are several factors we have had to consider, but the main one is that we do not have enough coxswains who are available for the full length of the trip (the team will leave from the Boathouse on July 10 and return July 16.

We appreciate that this will be disappointing news to many athletes.  We are looking into another racing opportunity this summer for the athletes who are unable to compete in Ohio.

The coaches will be doing selection next week to determine the roster for Club Nationals.  If your athlete is unable to compete at this event, please have him/her let the coaches know by 5pm, Tuesday, July 4th.  We appreciate your letting them know so that they may set the line-ups as soon as possible, and can complete the planning for the trip.  We expect the fee for this trip to be $900-1,000/athlete.

With kind regards,

Justin Ochal
Program Director, Mercer Rowing

PNRA/Mercer Alumni

Hello PNRA/Mercer Alumni,

The boathouse will be open for your use this summer free of charge.

The hours you are able to use the workout space will be 5:30-7:00AM, 1:00-3:00PM and 6:00-8:00PM. If you plan to use the erg room this summer, please check in first with Coach Ochal to sign a wavier form.

If you would like to row on the water you will have to join one of our programs that we are offering this summer.

IDR Information

Hello, Mercer Parents,

This weekend is the first regatta of the summer:  the IDR in Philadelphia.  The event spans 2 days, with time trials on Friday, and races on Saturday.  Mercer has entered boats in both the U17 and U19 categories.  The coaches will post the line-ups shortly.  Here is what you need to know:

The Independence Day Regatta (IDR) is an “away” regatta on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia.  The City closes down Kelly Drive, which is the road that runs along the River on one side (fun fact:  Kelly Dr is named for Grace Kelly’s father).  Also, as it is 4th of July weekend in Philadelphia – the area will be particularly crowded.  This means you need to plan travel time accordingly.

Please drop your athletes off at the Gillin Boathouse, St Joseph’s University:  2200 Kelly Dr, Philadelphia.  Most phone apps recognize the location if you enter Gillin Boathouse.  It is NOT located on Boathouse Row, so please be sure to check before you get down there.   Please send water and snacks with your athlete!

We will have a Mercer tent set up on Saturday, farther down the course near the Grandstand.  The athletes will be up near the start; parents will be down near the finish.  This will be an informal affair, a place for us all to gather and cheer for our team.  In years past, parents have brought drinks, snacks, chairs.  There is no planned food, so it’s up to you whether you want to bring things to share.

Time trials and heats are on Friday.  Time trials are races that set the boats up for semi- finals on Saturday.  Not every boat that races on Friday will advance to the Saturday races.  They are set up in Heats, so they do race against other boats, as opposed to against the clock.  The finals are on Saturday.  Results are posted by the Grandstand or on www.regattacentral.com.

Where to park?  IDR offers parking passes to display on your windshield so you can park farther down the course near the Grandstand and beyond.  The pass allows you to get through the police barricades at either end of the course on Kelly Dr, which is useful when you are dropping off your athletes (the drop off point is inside the barricaded area).  In addition, many park up the hill from the course and walk down.  The passes are on the regatta website:  www.independencedayregatta.com.  Most of this is pretty self-explanatory when you get to the site, but feel free to give me a call if it looks confusing (it was to me my first time):  Jen cell (202) 360-8683.

If your LAST NAME begins with A-M, please send a case of water or Gatorade to share with the team.

If your LAST NAME begins with N-Z, please send a box of Clif bars or a few servings of fruit (bag of apples, bunch of bananas) to share with the team.

PLEASE NOTE:  Because the athletes have varying race schedules and times that they need to be at the course, they should each bring whatever food (including lunch) he or she would like for the day.

This Week at MERCER

Good Morning Parents and Athletes,

First, I would like to thank all of  those who volunteered this past weekend. Without your help and dedication to the Mercer Rowing Program, we wouldn’t be able to run such a great regatta this past weekend!!!

Just want to cover a few things that will be happening at the boathouse this week.

  1. Lost and Found will be donated on Wednesday, April 26th. Please have your child check to see if they are missing clothes. We also have a good collection of non-disposable water bottles. If your child is missing their water bottle please have them claim it.
  2. We will have our team pictures on Thursday, April 27th. Please have your child’s uniform ready for the picture. Novice will wear their Mercer t shirt; Varsity will wear their uni for the picture. In addition, we will take a senior college picture. Seniors, please bring a t-shirt or sweatshirt of the college you will be attending next year.
  3. Saratoga information will be posted tonight.

JL Store Opening Soon, Practice Schedule Updates

Hello!

Our JL Store will open soon! The shipping time is about 5-6 weeks so we should have our gear in before the Mercer Sprints in April. Varsity athletes need to have a “uni” to race in and we suggest our novice athletes purchase a pair of “trou” to race in. Novice are not required to purchase any gear, and the only item varsity needs is the unisuit. Late orders will delay our shipment so please order in the time frame provided.

The Varsity Spring practice schedule has been confirmed. They will practice Saturday from 10:30 AM-1 PM and Sunday from 7-10 AM. Tuesdays are now OFF for all varsity rowers.

Novice practice will be held this Saturday (3/4) from 8:30-10:30. This is the last practice of the Winter season for our novice rowers. We will be having OPTIONAL practices for novice rowers before spring season starts. These are open to all novice currently signed up for spring.

Boys: March 7th, 6-8 PM. This date is set. March 9th and 15th, 6-8 PM. These dates are tentative and weather permitting.

Girls: March 14th, 6-8 PM. This date is set. March 8th and 16th, 6-8 PM. These dates are tentative and weather permitting.

We will update the schedule at the beginning of each week once we know what the weather forecast will be. This is a great way to get some strokes in before the season starts!

We made it through the winter! GO MERCER!
