2016 Philadelphia Youth Regatta Information

Hello, Mercer Parents!

Coming up this Saturday, July 23, is the Philadelphia Youth Regatta. It is in the same location as the Independence Day Regatta, and the same procedures for athlete drop off and parking apply for this regatta as they did for IDR. Here are some more details to help you:

To register for the Philly Youth Regatta, go Here

For information about the event, go to http://philadelphiayouthregatta.com. There you can find schedules, heat sheets, results links, and a course map. There will also be a live feed of the racing, which can be found at www.rowinglive.com.

If using Google Maps to get to the course, use 2200 Kelly Drive, Philadelphia, PA as your destination address. When you arrive, please drop your athlete off at the Mercer boat trailer, which will be parked in the lot adjacent to the St. Joseph University (Gillin) boathouse.  Mercer spectators will meet toward the finish line farther down the course to cheer.

Be aware that parking is limited and that the section of Kelly Drive along the racecourse (from above the boathouse to beyond the grandstand) will be closed to traffic during the regatta.  IN ORDER TO ACCESS AND PARK AT THE COURSE, YOU MUST PRINT THIS Parking Pass AND DISPLAY IT IN YOUR WINDSHIELD Parking Pass.

To help keep the athletes hydrated and fueled during racing, please send the following with your athlete to bring to the trailer if you can:

If your LAST NAME begins with A-M, please send a box of Clif bars or a few servings of fruit (bananas, watermelon, etc) to share with the team.

If your LAST NAME begins with N-Z, please send case of water or Gatorade to share with the team.

PLEASE NOTE:  Because the athletes have varying race schedules and times that they need to be at the course, they should each bring whatever food (including lunch) he or she would like for the day.

So pack a picnic, bring a chair to park in the shade, and we’ll see you at the Schuylkill!

GO, MERCER!

2016 IDR Information for Varsity Girls U17 8+ and U17 4+

Mercer Parents/Athletes,

Our first summer regatta begins this Friday! Below should be all the information you need to know for the Independence Day Regatta!

TRAILER LOADING: As this is an away regatta the athletes will be loading the trailer Thursday after practice. Please be aware that trailer loading can take some time and although we try to get off the water a tad early your child may be a little later than normal for pick up!

LOCATION: The regatta will be held in Philadelphia on the famous Schuylkill River! For information on directions please click here. The address to use for GPS is: 2200 Kelly Drive, Philadelphia PA, 19129 (Address is the St. Joe’s (Gillin) Boathouse).

DROP OFF: All athletes should arrive 2 hours before their scheduled race time. Please drop your athlete off at the Mercer boat trailer, which will be parked in the lot adjacent to the St. Joseph University (Gillin) boathouse. Once an athlete arrives at the trailer on race day we require their undivided attention and focus. Parent presence around the trailer causes distraction for both coaches and athletes. We ask that all parents remain at the big blue Mercer tent toward the finish line farther down the course. After your athlete’s race is over and they have been dismissed by their coach they are allowed to be picked up.

PARKING: Be aware that parking is extremely limited and that the section of Kelly Drive along the racecourse (from above the boathouse to beyond the grandstand) will be closed to traffic during the regatta. IN ORDER TO PARK AT THE COURSE, YOU MUST PRINT THIS PARKING PASS AND DISPLAY IT IN YOUR WINDSHIELD.

UNIFORM: All athletes are asked to arrive wearing the Mercer unisuit and Mercer hat.

WEATHER: Friday and Saturday are scheduled to be very hot. Please make sure athletes come prepared with sunscreen, water, hat, and sunglasses.

SCHEDULE: Below is the schedule for the Mercer boats. Here is the entire schedule for this weekend’s racing. As the schedule might change please keep checking back.

FOOD DONATIONS: The parent coordinators have asked athletes to donate the following items for the regatta to be dropped off at the trailer with your athlete.

If your LAST NAME begins with A-M, please send a case of water or Gatorade to share with the team.
If your LAST NAME begins with N-Z, please send a box of Clif bars or a few servings of fruit (bag of apples, bunch of bananas) to share with the team.

PLEASE NOTE: Because the athletes have varying race schedules and times that they need to be at the course, they should each bring whatever food (including lunch) they would like for the day.

IDR Information

Hello, Mercer Parents!

With the Independence Day Regatta (IDR) coming up this weekend, we wanted to get some information to you about the event and the venue (Schuylkill River in Philadelphia). I know this is a long post, but please read the whole thing — rowing is an endurance sport for both the athletes and their parents!

All Juniors racing will take place on Friday and Saturday*.  For information about the event, go to www.independencedayregatta.com. There you can find schedules, heat sheets and results links, food truck information, and a course map.

For information about how to get to the course, click HERE.  Use 2200 Kelly Drive, Philadelphia, PA if using Google Maps.

When you arrive, please drop your athlete off at the Mercer boat trailer, which will be parked in the lot adjacent to the St. Joseph University (Gillin) boathouse.  Mercer spectators will meet at the big blue Mercer tent toward the finish line farther down the course.

Be aware that parking is limited and that the section of Kelly Drive along the racecourse (from above the boathouse to beyond the grandstand) will be closed to traffic during the regatta.  IN ORDER TO PARK AT THE COURSE, YOU MUST PRINT THIS PARKING PASS AND DISPLAY IT IN YOUR WINDSHIELD (PARKING PASS).

To help keep the athletes hydrated and fueled during racing, please send the following with your athlete to bring to the trailer if you can:

If your LAST NAME begins with A-M, please send a case of water or Gatorade to share with the team.

If your LAST NAME begins with N-Z, please send a box of Clif bars or a few servings of fruit (bag of apples, bunch of bananas) to share with the team.

PLEASE NOTE:  Because the athletes have varying race schedules and times that they need to be at the course, they should each bring whatever food (including lunch) he or she would like for the day.

For parents, we will have a cooler with water, but again since race times are pretty spread out throughout the weekend, we encourage you to bring whatever you would like to eat along with you.  (The IDR website also says the food trucks are back this year!)  You might also want to bring a chair to relax in or a bike to ride along the path that follows the river/Kelly Drive during down time. Outside of Juniors events, there will be many familiar faces competing in the “Intermediate” (U23) category, giving us even more reasons to cheer.

*For parents of rising seniors:  on Sunday there will be a College Expo, which is an opportunity for athletes wishing to continue rowing in college to meet with collegiate coaches.  For information and to register, go to http://www.independencedayregatta.com/?page_id=853.

Whew! Congratulations, you made it to the finish! We will see you at the Schuylkill to cheer, “GO, MERCER!”

P.S. If you need to get in touch with any of us, please feel free to contact us at:

Mercer Novice Update: Week 8!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

The season is coming to an end! Coach Zach and I are so proud of the hard work all our athletes have put in the past two months. With that being said, the novices still have one more race this Saturday!!!

SATURDAY RACE INFORMATION: This Saturday the novices will be racing in the MAPL Regatta. This is a 1500m race against the Mid Atlantic Prep schools.

  • Who is racing?: Due to the amount of boats entered in the Boy’s Novice event only our top 2 boy’s novices eights will be racing. All four novice girl’s eights will be racing. (Weather depending). Novice Girl’s lineups can be found at the end of the email (Please keep reading!!).
  • When should athletes arrive?: As of right now the start time for races is 4pm. We ask that our athletes arrive at the boathouse at 2pm.
  • Where should families watch?: As the race will be 1500 meters the best vantage point would be the Blue Gazebo on the other side of the lake. I would like a strong crowd over there to show support for our novice crews.
  • What should athletes wear?: Athletes should have the racing uni on with layers on top as it will be windy.
  • Weather Information: High winds are predicted for Saturday afternoon. As safety is our biggest concern, there is a potential that boats may not race on Saturday due to the high winds.

MONDAY PRACTICE: Monday is Novice Boathouse Clean Up Day! Practice will take place from 4 – 6pm. This is a mandatory practice for all novice rowers.

BANQUET: Mercer will be holding a team banquet on May 24th at 6pm. This is open to both athletes and their families! It is a great event to celebrate the end of the season. More information to come!

HOMEFRONT DONATIONS: Boy’s Novice Head Coach and Outreach Coordinator, Zach Spitzer, is collecting personal care items to donate to Homefront. He is asking that all families contribute one item for donation. Donations can be dropped off to the PNRA Office.

IRAs & YOUTH NATIONALS: Please keep the weekends of 6/3 – 6/5 and 6/9 – 6/12 open as PNRA/Mercer will be hosting both the IRAs (Collegiate Championships for Heavyweight Men and Lightweight Men and Women) as well as Youth Nationals! This is going to take a serious volunteer effort from our team and I want to remind you to keep an eye out for volunteer information!

Finally, I would like to thank all parents and athletes for an amazingly fun and successful season! It has truly been such a pleasure working with the novice athletes. I hope they have enjoyed the season just as much as I have.

I look forward to seeing you all at our last regatta of the season and at the Banquet!

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Families Helping Families

Mercer families, we need your help!

As you may have read in a previous blog post, Mercer Juniors have teamed up with HomeFront, a local organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty for area families. As part of this effort, rowers will have opportunities to volunteer hands-on with HomeFront and can contribute to donation efforts that help meet HomeFront’s clients’ changing needs.

Here’s where you come in. This month, we are collecting and donating personal care items. If each athlete could please bring at least one item from the list below by Friday, we could make a real difference for the families HomeFront serves:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
  • Face Wash
  • Towels
  • Q-Tips
  • Loofahs
  • Deodorant
  • Sunscreen
  • Body Wash

If you have any questions, please feel free to email our Outreach Coordinator, Zach Spitzer, at zspitzer@rowpnra.org.

Thank you for your generosity!

For more information about HomeFront, go to homefrontnj.org.

Mercer Novice: Regionals Information!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

Regionals is tomorrow!!! Here at Mercer we are all very excited for this weekend. Below is (hopefully) all the information you need to know. Please make sure to look closely at the time the athletes are expected to arrive at the boathouse based on what boat they are in. As our races are in the late afternoon on Saturday, please try to have a relaxing morning with not a lot of activity!

NOVICE GIRLS: Please remember we have a team bonding event with the varsity girls after practice today at the boathouse. It should run no later than 7PM.

DROP OFF: When you drop your athlete off please drop them off and leave the boathouse. Once an athlete arrives at the boathouse on race day I require their undivided focus. Parents hanging around the boathouse causes distractions for both coaches and athletes. We ask that all parents drive over to the other side of the lake and view the regatta with all other spectators (This is also the best vantage point for watching the races). After your athlete’s race is over and they have been dismissed by their coach they are allowed to be picked up.

UNIFORM: All athletes are asked to arrive wearing the Mercer unisuit. As it will be cold, I would recommend athletes coming in layers which they can take off before racing.

VOLUNTEERING: We still need many volunteers for Saturday and Sunday!! Please remember that as this is a home regatta and we ask all families to contribute 4 hours of volunteering. Please click here to sign up to volunteer.

SUNDAY RACES: Boats must place top 4 in their heat on Saturday to race in the semis Sunday morning. To advance to the final boats must place top 3 in their semi. Below are the approximate of arrival and racing for those events. Those racing Sunday morning that advance to the final will stay at the boathouse in between their races. This is mandatory. Those racing on Sunday morning please come with a packed lunch to eat in between races (hopefully we qualify from the semis to finals!!).

WEATHER: Sunday is scheduled to be quite windy. As this is a qualifying event for varsity crews to advance to Youth Nationals, the schedule may change on Sunday to accommodate getting those events in. Please be aware that the schedule might change due to the weather conditions.

SCHEDULE: Below is the schedule for our boats. Here is the schedule for this weekend’s racing. As it might change please keep checking back.

Regionals Food Update

This Sunday, along with the items listed on the athletes’ food signups, there will be a limited amount of sandwiches and salad at the boathouse for the varsity and novice athletes who have more than one race and will be unable to leave Caspersen between races. The rest of the athletes are encouraged to come to the marina-side food tent after their race, where there will be plenty of hot and cold lunch options for them.
There are a few items still to be claimed for the weekend — please take a look and fill in wherever you can!
THANK YOU!

ATTENTION: Varsity Girls/Novice Girls

Attention all Mercer Varsity/Novice Girls:

There will be a girl’s team wide bonding activity after practice this Friday, May 6th at the boathouse.

The event should go no later than 7PM.

Please arrange carpools/rides home appropriately!

If you have any questions, please contact Coach Maddie – 609-799-7100×103

Mid-Atlantic Regionals Volunteer Sign-up

We are still in need of volunteers for this weekend’s races. The race schedule is available and will include a full day on Saturday (8 am to 7 pm) and a half day on Sunday (8 am to 1:30 pm). There have been two additional shifts for stakeboat holders added (one on Saturday and one Sunday) which are crucial to be filled. Please take a look at the sign-up link for available shifts. As this is a Mercer event, each Mercer family is required to volunteer 4 hours and if you missed Mercer Lake Sprints, you can sign up for a double shift to make up those hours. Contact PNRA Events Manager Hilary Gehman (202-236-9733) with any questions.

Athletes’ Food Signups: Mid-Atlantic Regionals, May 7-8

Good morning! Here are the food signups for this weekend’s regatta.  They may change a bit later in the week, but please take a look and sign up to provide an item or items — there are lots of races, which means lots of rowers!  Athletes should bring their own bars, but drinks and other snacks will be available.  Please have all items to the Caspersen Boathouse by either the day before (cold or room temperature items) or early in the morning on race day (i.e., oatmeal).  As always, thank you greatly for your help!

Saturday’s Athletes’ Food Signup can be found here.

Sunday’s Athletes’ Food Signup can be food here.

PLEASE READ: PNRA/Mercer Novice Waiver Information

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

The following novices need to sign the US Rowing Waiver to compete this weekend. There are two options of membership – to race at US Rowing Mid Atlantic Regionals (this weekend’s race) US Rowing requires a Championship membership.

To complete the waiver please go to – https://membership.usrowing.org. Once you select to sign up for an individual membership, under organization please search Princeton National Rowing Association and when prompted for the club code enter – ACY67.

The following athletes need to sign the waiver and create a membership or upgrade from Basic to Championship.

Below are also the line ups for this weekend! Once the schedule and lane draws come out I will have more information for you.

Mid-Atlantic Regionals Food Tent Signups

Regionals are coming up next weekend!  Below are two separate food tent signups — one for Saturday, May 7, and one for Sunday, May 8 — please check them out and sign up to bring an item (or items) to contribute. Please have breakfast items, water, and ice to the tent by 7 am and lunch items to the tent by 10 am.  Please also bring prepared foods in an 8×10 aluminum pan.

THANK YOU!

Mercer Novice Update: Week 6!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

The season is quickly coming to an end! Coach Zach and I are so excited by all the improvements our athletes have made in the past few weeks!

We have to big races ahead – Regionals (next weekend) and MAPL (Saturday May 14th). Next weekend is the US Rowing Mid Atlantic Regionals. The event is held on both Saturday and Sunday. With 19 entries in the Girls’s Youth Novice 8+ event and 16 in the Boy’s Novice 8+ the athletes will have a chance to progress through heats, semis and finals. A progression entails that during the course of the heats and semis boats will advance to the next round or be eliminated depending on how they place in their race.

An official schedule has not been released. However, it is expected that all novice eights will race the heats in the afternoon on Saturday, semis on Sunday morning, and finals late Sunday afternoon.

PNRA is still in need of for volunteers for next weekend. We ask all families contribute four volunteer hours for this regatta! Please sign up here.

Once I have the schedule and lane draws I will send out an email detailing all regatta information.

Below is a list of novice girls expected to race next weekend. Coach Zach will be sending his racing roster out by Sunday. It is expected that all athletes racing are at practice everyday the week leading up to a race.

PNRA/Mercer Pairing Up With Homefront!

Mercer Parents/Athletes,

We have recently begun working with a local organization called Homefront! This organization helps families that have come on hard times by giving them a place to live, and food to eat, while they complete their education and get back on their feet. We have a volunteering opportunity coming up for our athletes on May 28th!

The volunteering sign up sheet will be given to the Varsity Boys first, and any remaining spots will be given to the Varsity girls that would like to participate. If there are remaining spots on the volunteer sign up, it will be opened up to the Novice programs. We are looking for 10 – 15 participants.

If you do not get a chance to volunteer in May, DON’T WORRY, we will have volunteering opportunities the last weekend of every month. We will also have volunteering opportunities with the Special Olympics in July! More information on that to come.

In the meantime, we will have boxes in the office to donate to Homefront. At the end of each month we will bring our donation to their facility when we go volunteer.

What we are asking for this month are personal care items (A list of preferred items is featured below)!

If you have any questions please feel free to email our Outreach Coordinator, Zach Spitzer.

Thank you!

Personal Care Items:
– Shampoo
– Conditioner
– Toothpaste
– Toothbrushes
– Face Wash
