Novice and 8th Grade Information!

Hello!

Fall season for the Novice and 8th Grade Development Team starts on Wednesday, September 6th, at 4 PM and will run until 6 PM. Please be on time to practice, and bring running shoes, a water bottle, hat, and sunscreen. Athletes should be prepared for warm weather.

Please have your athlete registered by the first day, and all forms completed and ready to hand in to Coach Amanda.

Caspersen Boathouse Location and Parking

The address for the Caspersen Rowing Center is 1 S.Post Road, West Windsor, NJ. Please note this is NOT the Marina or ‘The Boathouse’, which is on the other side of the lake.

If you are driving your athlete to practice, please DO NOT drive them all the way up to the boathouse- this area is reserved for coaches, staff, and buses. Rather, please drop your athlete off at the base of the parking lot; athletes will walk up to the boathouse from there. There will be parent volunteers the first few days to help set up the drop off system!

There are over 150 athletes registered for the Mercer Junior Programs this Fall. The parking lot will be busy, both at drop off and at pick up. We ask for your patience and appreciate you following the parking protocol. The athletes will know where to go, and will be able to find you at the end of practice. Safety is our primary concern!

Mandatory Novice and Development Team Meetings

Novice Team- Saturday, September 16th, 9 AM at the Caspersen Rowing Center

Important Message for all Mercer Junior Varsity Rowers

Due to the success of the Mercer Rowing programs and growing popularity in the sport of rowing, interest in Mercer Junior Rowing has grown steadily in recent years.  Last year almost 200 athletes participated in the program.  This attendance has strained the program infrastructure, and has made it challenging for the coaching staff to provide a quality experience for all participants.  Early indications for Fall 2017 participation suggest that interest in the program may exceed last years record participation level.

The PNRA staff and Mercer coaches have spent time this summer considering the optimal size for the Mercer Junior Rowing program.  Based on evaluating numerous constraints (including equipment, workout space, coaching resources and water time) it will be necessary to implement a try-out period for the program starting with the Fall 2017 season. This will enable the program to have a squad size that will balance team size and depth, deliver a solid rowing experience for each athlete, and result in the team performance we all expect from Mercer Junior Rowing.

All athletes interested in the varsity program will be asked to register for a try-out period which will consist of the first two weeks of the season.  During this try-out period athletes will be evaluated on running, erging, and a general fitness test.  After try-outs are held, the coaches will post a list of athletes who will be invited to join the team. Try-outs will be held in August for the fall season and in March/April for the spring season. An invitation to participate in the fall season will not guarantee an invitation to the spring season.

The Fall 2017 try-out period that will run from August 28th through September 8th.   At this time, the try-out period is being implemented for only the varsity teams.

Payment from varsity rowers for the fall season will be due after the fall roster has been posted at the conclusion of the two week try-out period.

Fall Varsity Try Outs will be held August 28th– September 9th, 2017

Selection will be based on the coaches’ assessment and judgment of the following criteria:

  1. General fitness – Running, body circuits, core, etc.
  2. Flexibility – Prospective athletes should be flexible enough to perform the stroke correctly and efficiently
  3. Attitude and coachability
  4. Overall rowing ability – Skill in the boat, on the ergometer and on land
  5. Erg fitness and weight adjusted number – Examples of this might be a 2k, 5k or 6k, 30″, 5x 5′, 2x 20, 2x5k or 6k
  6. Other articulated criteria related to the athlete’s potential competitive performance.

If rowers have any questions, they should contact Coach Justin (jochal@rowpnra.org) or Coach Matt (mcarlsen@rowpnra.org).

Coach Justin

Boathouse closed in August

Good morning, Mercer Athletes and Families,

This is a reminder and a clarification of an earlier post.  The season has ended for Mercer Juniors.  The Junior athletes cannot use the Boathouse facilities (this includes the erg room and boats) until August 28, the start of the fall season.  Those Juniors who are camp counselors may use the Boathouse for counseling duties only.

Thank you for your understanding.

Boathouse Usage

Good afternoon Mercer Junior Parents and Athletes,

This is just a friendly reminder that the boathouse is closed to all Junior athletes. If you are working the camp you are only allowed to use the boathouse for your camp counseling purposes only. The boathouse is still open for all Mercer Alumni.

Thank you for your understanding,

2017 Club Nationals

Mercer Parents,

Our goal for this Summer Season was to include Club Nationals for all our athletes.  Unfortunately, we are only able to send a limited number of boats to this regatta.  There are several factors we have had to consider, but the main one is that we do not have enough coxswains who are available for the full length of the trip (the team will leave from the Boathouse on July 10 and return July 16.

We appreciate that this will be disappointing news to many athletes.  We are looking into another racing opportunity this summer for the athletes who are unable to compete in Ohio.

The coaches will be doing selection next week to determine the roster for Club Nationals.  If your athlete is unable to compete at this event, please have him/her let the coaches know by 5pm, Tuesday, July 4th.  We appreciate your letting them know so that they may set the line-ups as soon as possible, and can complete the planning for the trip.  We expect the fee for this trip to be $900-1,000/athlete.

With kind regards,

Justin Ochal
Program Director, Mercer Rowing

2017 IDR Information

Mercer Parents/Athletes,

Our first summer regatta begins this Friday! Below should be all the information you need to know for the Independence Day Regatta!

TRAILER LOADING: As this is an away regatta the athletes will be loading the trailer tomorrow after practice. Please be aware that trailer loading can take some time and although we try to get off the water a tad early your child may be a little later than normal for pick up!

LOCATION: The regatta will be held in Philadelphia on the famous Schuylkill River! For information on directions please click here. The address to use for GPS is: 2200 Kelly Drive, Philadelphia PA, 19129 (Address is the St. Joe’s (Gillin) Boathouse).

DROP OFF: All athletes should arrive 2 hours before their scheduled race time. Please drop your athlete off at the Mercer boat trailer, which will be parked in the lot adjacent to the St. Joseph University (Gillin) boathouse. Once an athlete arrives at the trailer on race day we require their undivided attention and focus. Parent presence around the trailer causes distraction for both coaches and athletes. We ask that all parents remain at the big blue Mercer tent toward the finish line farther down the course. After your athlete’s race is over and they have been dismissed by their coach they are allowed to be picked up.

PARKING: Be aware that parking is extremely limited and that the section of Kelly Drive along the racecourse (from above the boathouse to beyond the grandstand) will be closed to traffic during the regatta. IN ORDER TO PARK AT THE COURSE, YOU MUST PRINT THIS PARKING PASS AND DISPLAY IT IN YOUR WINDSHIELD.

UNIFORM: All athletes are asked to arrive wearing the Mercer unisuit. If your athlete doesn’t have unisuit they should ask their coach for a Mercer T-Shirt.

WEATHER: Friday and Saturday are scheduled to be very hot. Please make sure athletes come prepared with sunscreen, water, hat, and sunglasses.

LINEUPS/SCHEDULE: Below you will find the lineups and schedule for the Mercer boats.  As the schedule might change please keep checking back to the blog for updates.

FOOD DONATIONS: The parent coordinators have asked athletes to donate the following items for the regatta to be dropped off at the trailer with your athlete.

If your LAST NAME begins with A-M, please send a case of water or Gatorade to share with the team.
If your LAST NAME begins with N-Z, please send a box of Clif bars or a few servings of fruit (bag of apples, bunch of bananas) to share with the team.

PLEASE NOTE: Because the athletes have varying race schedules and times that they need to be at the course, they should each bring whatever food (including lunch) they would like for the day.

IDR Information

Hello, Mercer Parents,

This weekend is the first regatta of the summer:  the IDR in Philadelphia.  The event spans 2 days, with time trials on Friday, and races on Saturday.  Mercer has entered boats in both the U17 and U19 categories.  The coaches will post the line-ups shortly.  Here is what you need to know:

The Independence Day Regatta (IDR) is an “away” regatta on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia.  The City closes down Kelly Drive, which is the road that runs along the River on one side (fun fact:  Kelly Dr is named for Grace Kelly’s father).  Also, as it is 4th of July weekend in Philadelphia – the area will be particularly crowded.  This means you need to plan travel time accordingly.

Please drop your athletes off at the Gillin Boathouse, St Joseph’s University:  2200 Kelly Dr, Philadelphia.  Most phone apps recognize the location if you enter Gillin Boathouse.  It is NOT located on Boathouse Row, so please be sure to check before you get down there.   Please send water and snacks with your athlete!

We will have a Mercer tent set up on Saturday, farther down the course near the Grandstand.  The athletes will be up near the start; parents will be down near the finish.  This will be an informal affair, a place for us all to gather and cheer for our team.  In years past, parents have brought drinks, snacks, chairs.  There is no planned food, so it’s up to you whether you want to bring things to share.

Time trials and heats are on Friday.  Time trials are races that set the boats up for semi- finals on Saturday.  Not every boat that races on Friday will advance to the Saturday races.  They are set up in Heats, so they do race against other boats, as opposed to against the clock.  The finals are on Saturday.  Results are posted by the Grandstand or on www.regattacentral.com.

Where to park?  IDR offers parking passes to display on your windshield so you can park farther down the course near the Grandstand and beyond.  The pass allows you to get through the police barricades at either end of the course on Kelly Dr, which is useful when you are dropping off your athletes (the drop off point is inside the barricaded area).  In addition, many park up the hill from the course and walk down.  The passes are on the regatta website:  www.independencedayregatta.com.  Most of this is pretty self-explanatory when you get to the site, but feel free to give me a call if it looks confusing (it was to me my first time):  Jen cell (202) 360-8683.

If your LAST NAME begins with A-M, please send a case of water or Gatorade to share with the team.

If your LAST NAME begins with N-Z, please send a box of Clif bars or a few servings of fruit (bag of apples, bunch of bananas) to share with the team.

PLEASE NOTE:  Because the athletes have varying race schedules and times that they need to be at the course, they should each bring whatever food (including lunch) he or she would like for the day.

The summer practice schedule starts Monday, June 19:  1-3pm.  Some athletes are still in school this first week.  ***Please let your coaches know if you will be absent or late by filling out the Absentee Form on the website. ***

Small boat practice also starts Tuesday, June 20  5:45-7:00 AM for the boys and 5:45-7:00 PM for girls, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Registration link will be up soon.

The big ask:  Club Nationals.  We are transporting athletes in vans, staying in a hotel, and competing in multiple events at both the U17 and U19 categories.  *** WE NEED CHAPERONES! ***  If you are interested in driving a van to Ohio that week (Monday July 10 – Sunday July 16), and being on hand to drive athletes to and from the course, help with meals, and be more involved in the day-to-day of Mercer Rowing, please let Jen Closser know:  closserj@gmail.com; (202) 360-8683 (cell).  Bonus:  you will be thanked and appreciated all day long!

We look forward to a fun and exciting summer of racing.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Parent Coordinators.

Regionals Updated Schedule

Hello,

US Rowing has released its tentative schedule for Regionals this weekend. The link to the schedule is below. Please be advised that the goal is to complete both the Time Trials (TT) AND the Finals on Saturday. However, the initial priority is to complete the TT Saturday. If the weather in the afternoon permits, US Rowing will run the Finals. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, US Rowing will move the Finals to Sunday. If the Finals are indeed rescheduled to Sunday, USRowing will prioritize Nationals Qualifying events. If the Finals need to be canceled, all Nationals Qualifying boats will be selected based off TT results. Please note that every effort will be made to hold all Finals in all events, but that there is a priority to finalize the Youth Nationals boats from this region.

Lightweight athletes and coxswains need to weigh in 2 hours before their race. You will not be able to weigh in before that 2 hour mark, or less than an hour before your race time. Please be on time!

The events Mercer will be competing in are listed below with updated times. The link below is the entire schedule including Saturday Finals. If the Finals are moved to Sunday we will update you Saturday night.

One last note:  a huge shout out to our fabulous food tent ladies, Tamara and Mary Agnes. They have planned for food on the Caspersen side during the Regatta. However, it is always wise to have your athletes pack food, snacks, and water bottles as well – with a long day of races, we want to make sure everyone comes prepared.

Mid-Atlantic Update and Tentative Lineups

PNRA/Mercer Parents,

Due to the strong possibility of this weekend’s severe weather the regatta organizing committee has decided to defer to our Adverse Weather Plan.

What this means:

  • USRowing will race all 34 events using the time trials system beginning at 8:00am on Saturday morning
  • Weather permitting, we will progress the races with more than one round
  • If we are unable to finish a round, the time trial will determine the order of finish for that event.
  • The weather forecast does not appear to allow us to delay the regatta.
  • By using the time trial system we will begin racing most events earlier than originally announced.

An updated schedule is being worked on and will be released Friday morning.

Important Information about the Inclement Weather Information:

Communication Plan if schedule changes are necessary due to weather:

Weekend Reminders

Hello!

Even though we have coaches and athletes leaving for Saratoga tomorrow we will still be running normal practices Friday and this weekend. The only change is *Sunday’s practice is OPTIONAL for varsity boys*. All other practices will be the same!

Nike gear is in! The final sweatshirts and sweatpants should be in by Monday so please check in with Coach Amanda for your gear. If you ordered JL outerwear the expected delivery date is May 2nd!

A final reminder to the athletes going to Saratoga to be at the boathouse by 3:45 so we can get wheels rolling by 4:15. Please bring a meal with you in the vans as we will only be stopping for a bathroom break and not a dinner break on the trip up.

Important things to remember if you are going to Saratoga:
-Uni/Mercer shirt
-Hat/Sunglasses/Sunscreen
-SOCKS
-Toiletries
-Chargers
-Homework! (AP test season is upon us)
-Reusable water bottle

2017 Tentative Saratoga Travel Roster

2017 Saratoga Tentative Schedule

This Week at MERCER

Good Morning Parents and Athletes,

First, I would like to thank all of  those who volunteered this past weekend. Without your help and dedication to the Mercer Rowing Program, we wouldn’t be able to run such a great regatta this past weekend!!!

Just want to cover a few things that will be happening at the boathouse this week.

  1. Lost and Found will be donated on Wednesday, April 26th. Please have your child check to see if they are missing clothes. We also have a good collection of non-disposable water bottles. If your child is missing their water bottle please have them claim it.
  2. We will have our team pictures on Thursday, April 27th. Please have your child’s uniform ready for the picture. Novice will wear their Mercer t shirt; Varsity will wear their uni for the picture. In addition, we will take a senior college picture. Seniors, please bring a t-shirt or sweatshirt of the college you will be attending next year.
  3. Saratoga information will be posted tonight.
