Youth Nationals Travel Information!

Youth Nationals 2019

Hi all!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came to the banquet last night and celebrated the (almost) end of the spring season for the programs. With that being said… onto the last one! It’s time for Youth Nationals. Please read this blog carefully, as all of the relevant information for the trip can be found here.

Youth Nationals 2019 will be held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, from June 6-9 (this is a change from previous years, when there were only 3 days of racing). The team will be flying down early on Tuesday, June 4th and returning late evening Sunday, June 9th (or extremely early Monday June 10th). The flight and transportation information is below. We have contracted with A1 to provide a bus from the boathouse to the airport and back again on the return. Athletes will contact their rides with ETA to the boathouse after departing the Philadelphia airport Sunday night.

Please note that since we are flying on Southwest, all passengers are allowed a free checked bag, so there will be no additional fee for this.

Departure:

Bus leaves Caspersen rowing center @ 2:45AM on Tuesday, June 4th en route to Philadelphia airport.

Flight Southwest WN3529 Tuesday 4 June 19

Depart Philadelphia 5:45am

Arrive Tampa 8:25am

We have rented several vans for transportation for the duration of the trip. Athletes will drive to Sarasota to rig and row then check in at the hotel.

Hotel: Homewood Suites by Hilton Sarasota

3470 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, Florida 34237

Telephone (941) 365-7300

Approximately 12 minute drive from course

The hotel has kitchens in the rooms and breakfast is included, so most of the meals will be there. There will be at least one team dinner out; both teams would love to have all families join us for the dinner. Details will be forthcoming, but please email Matt (mcarlsen@rowpnra.org) or Jamie (jhamp@rowpnra.org) if you can come! We would love to have everyone who is traveling for the race at dinner with us!

Wednesday will be a training day, with racing Thursday through Sunday. After racing Sunday, the teams will try to find something enjoyable (beach?) for the rest of the day before heading to the airport.

Return:

Flight Southwest WN4466 Sunday 9 June 19

Depart Tampa 8:40pm

Arrive Philadelphia 11:15pm

Bus picks up at airport and expected arrival at Caspersen around 12:45-1am

Trip fee: The trip fee will be posted sometime later this week; Hilary will send out an email when the link is live. The current fee is around $1150, but we are still hoping to subsidize the trip by transporting boats and other equipment for teams. We understand it is an expensive trip and have done our best to keep costs down, but there are several costs (extra day of racing, hotels, trailer, etc) that are unfortunately fixed. We are committed to helping make it affordable; if you need financial assistance, please contact Hilary at hgehman@rowpnra.org

The girls travel roster is finalized; the boys travel roster will be finalized by the end of practice this Friday, but boat lineups are still subject to change.

Any further questions, please contact the parent coordinators, Hilary, or the coaches if necessary. Thank you for your support and GO MERCER!

Saratoga Invitational Information

Saratoga Invitational 2019

Hi everyone!

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed this weekend at Mercer Sprints!  The racing went off smoothly despite the weather and all the crews had great performances!

On Friday, April 26th, select varsity and novice athletes will depart for the Saratoga Invitational in Saratoga Springs, NY.  The tentative lineups can be found here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VDOesZL_RWH3yoyhAIdsqnPriz_TvPST2VIxZmNXbs0/edit?usp=sharing

The link to pay for the trip is here.

We understand this is an expensive trip, but every athlete races multiple days. Please email Hilary at hgehman@rowpnra.org with any financial concerns.

If you are a parent who is attending the regatta to watch, please fill out this form here to help the parents coordinators plan for spectators and enhance your regatta experience.

Below is information about the event.

TRAVEL DETAILS:

There will be one van per boat.  The novice coaches will be transporting their athletes; parent volunteers will be driving the varsity vans and serving as chaperones for the regatta.

Athletes should arrive at the boathouse at regular practice time on Friday. The vans will depart as soon as all athletes in the van have arrived. All athletes should remember they are representing Mercer and wear appropriate clothing, preferably with a Mercer logo. The athletes, coaches, and chaperones will be staying together at the Hilton Garden Inn in Saratoga Springs both Friday and Saturday night.  Racing is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The vans will depart the course on Sunday around 5pm and return to the boathouse. Please note: all athletes are expected to remain at the course on Sunday until all Mercer crews are done racing! No vans will be departing until that time. ETA is expected to be 9-10pm, but please text your athletes for updates. Parent coordinators will also post in the parents Facebook group.

FOOD:

Athletes should bring any extra snacks they want for the drives and weekend racing. For the drive up Friday, all athletes will be provided with a fruit cup and sandwich. Vans will stop at least once, but try to bring extra food to minimize stop times and keep the arrival in Saratoga as early as possible. Breakfast both Saturday and Sunday will be at the hotel, and lunch will be provided at the course both days at the Mercer Tent. Dinner will be catered at the hotel on Saturday night. Athletes will be given $15 cash to purchase dinner on their own at a rest stop on the way home Sunday.

RACE VENUE INFORMATION:

The trailer, tent, and launch area for the race is at Lee’s Park, adjacent to the course.  Parking is available for $15 per day. There will be a Mercer Tent for parents and lunch location. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

In past years, the weather has often been cold, wet, and windy.  Athletes should pack extra layers and be prepared for all conditions.  Athletes may want to bring extra money for the regatta as well – many of them like to buy t-shirts.  If you have any questions, please contact either Jeb Barkenbush at jebarken@gmail.com, or Jen Closser at closserj@gmail.com.

Neczypor Regatta Information

Good evening!

All 4 teams are starting off the season this Saturday at the Steve Neczypor regatta in Cherry Hill/Camden, NJ. Racing is ONLY on Saturday, April 6 from 8:30 am until around 4:30 pm. Travel roster, lineups, and race information (including race times, arrival times, lanes, and more!) can all be found HERE:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jDpWctxEw6CYrpeyGrSD7Ts5Zti4E1Hi4smVgxu2ZHI/edit#gid=500935567

Coaches will also be providing the rowers with all necessary information, so please check with your child about details. They will know the answers if they have been listening.

Transportation is not provided for this regatta, so all rowers must find their own ride to this race. The location where your athletes should be dropped off is the corner of Cuthbert and North Park Boulevard in Cherry Hill, NJ (you can probably use 510 Park Blvd, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002 as a GPS address, which is pretty close to where the trailer will be parked). Athletes should bring their own food and plenty of gear/clothing for a full day at the course, especially if they are racing more than once.

For parents hoping to watch the racing, this is a great venue to do so! The parent coordinators have arranged for the Mercer tent and tables to be near the finish line for viewing. There is a potluck signup link to volunteer to bring food for athletes and spectators – please volunteer to bring something if possible! We are hoping to make this a low waste event, so please bring reusable coffee mugs and water bottles to fill up!

Also, as a reminder, please be sure to pay the Trip Fee for the race. It is $27 and you can pay by check made out to PNRA (drop off with your coach or with Hilary in the office) or via Regatta Central via this link. If your son or daughter is NOT racing, you do not need to pay the trip fee.

Please reach out to your coach or to Hilary (hgehman@rowpnra.org) with any questions.

Spring Patagonia Order

Order forms are now available for this season’s Patagonia gear! Forms can be printed here –  Spring 2019 Patagonia Order Form – Sheet1 – or they can be acquired from the boathouse office. Order forms and payment MUST be turned in to Coach Anna by the end of practice on Friday, 3/29. Checks can be made payable to Princeton National Rowing Association. Late orders cannot be accepted, nor can order forms submitted without payment. Please note that all Patagonia clothing is optional. Please contact Anna (akalfaian@rowpnra.org) with any questions!

Welcome to the Spring 2019 Season!

Hello Parents and Rowers,

The spring Varsity season is officially underway, and the Novice season will be starting up on Monday. We are so excited to be getting back out on the water again and preparing for our first race, which is just three short weeks away! With the start of the season, a few logistical reminders:

First, please make sure that you have registered through Regatta Central! When doing so, please make sure that your contact information is correct, as we often distribute updates via email.

Second, please make sure that all of the necessary forms have been submitted and are up to date! With the exception of the swim test, all of the forms need to be resubmitted on a yearly basis, so any forms submitted prior to June 2018 will need to be renewed in advance of the spring season. Please ensure that novice rowers bring their forms on the first day of practice, or submit them in advance at the main office or via email to akalfaian@rowpnra.org or ahennessey@rowpnra.org. For safety reasons, we will not be able to allow rowers on the water if they have not submitted their forms.

Finally, please mark your calendars for the mandatory Parents Meetings. There will be separate meetings for varsity and novice parents; they will each take place at the boathouse the Saturday following the first week of practice. Hilary Gehman (Director of Mercer Rowing Programs) and the head coaches will provide important information about the season, give the novice parents an introduction to the sport, and answer any questions parents may have:

Varsity Parents Meeting: Saturday, March 16, at 9:00 am

Novice Parents Meeting: Saturday, March 23, at 9:00 am

Spring 2019 varsity tryouts schedule and updates!

Hi everyone!

It may not feel like it but the spring season is here! Varsity tryouts start this week (tomorrow, March 4) and run through the Row for a Cure on Sunday, March 10.

If you have not already registered, please register for both tryouts (free) and the Row for a Cure ASAP!

Due to the weather predictions this week, the current plan is for the teams to follow the WINTER SCHEDULE. FOr those unfamiliar with this schedule, this means practice will be 4-6:15pm every day (except Mondays for the boys, which is 5:45-8pm). The boys are at warehouse Wednesday and Friday, and the girls are there Tuesday and Thursday. Coaches will announce any potential changes at practice and tell athletes if they should check back for updates the next day. We will continue to monitor the weather and try to post updates and make announcements at practice as we try to get out of the water this week.

Thanks and GO MERCER!

Coach Matt and Coach Jamie

No practice for Boys teams Monday, 02/18/19!

This is just a reminder that there is NO PRACTICE for both the Varsity Boys and Novice Boys for Monday, February 18, 2019. This is to provide a day off after the tank session this morning. Please enjoy the day off from practice and school for President’s Day!

Practice will resume normal schedule Tuesday through Friday, 4-6:15pm and Saturday 9:15am this week. Thanks!

Also please remember to spread the word about our OPEN HOUSE for prospective new rowers, this Saturday from 11:30am-1pm!

Summer Learn-to-Row Coaches Needed!

Hi Mercer team!

Interested in spreading enthusiasm for the sport of rowing to the next generation of athletes? Ready to recruit future teammates? Want to get $$/volunteer hours for spending time on the water? Apply to be a coach for this summer’s Learn-to-Row Camps!

We are looking for responsible, encouraging, and enthusiastic rowers and coxswains to teach the basics of the rowing stroke in the boat and on the erg, lead land exercises, and most importantly, create a fun environment to introduce campers to the sport. There are five week-long camp sessions (June 24-28, July 15-19, July 22-26, July 29-Aug 2, and Aug 5-9). Each camp runs Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm. Head coaches (~8 per week) will lead practices from the launch (must have a Boating Safety Certificate, have completed their senior year of high school, and have at least 2 years of rowing/coxing experience. First Aid/CPR certifications preferred.) Assistant coaches (approximately 25 per week) will provide help and encouragement as experienced pairs/coxswains in the boats (must have at least a full season of rowing/coxing experience; assistant coaches under 16 will be compensated with volunteer hours.)

If interested, please fill out this application (link below) by Monday, February 11.
Email Coach Anna (akalfaian@rowpnra.org) with any questions.

Head of the Halloween and Mercer Fall Classic

Hi everyone!

Thanks to everyone for another great weekend of racing at the Head of the Schuylkill, including the first place finishes by the Girl’s 2nd Varsity 8 and Novice 4.
We are now looking forward to our last two races of the year – the Head of the Halloween and the Mercer Fall Classic.
The Head of the Halloween is during practice tomorrow, Wednesday October 31st. We will be racing in mixed 8s (novice and varsity together) along with the Peddie boys. The race will be one around the lake piece and one 500m sprint. Practice will be over after this, so please plan on picking up athletes around 5:45pm! Costumes and candy to share after the race are highly encouraged!
The Mercer Fall Classic is this Saturday, November 3rd at the Caspersen Rowing Center. Hilary will be sending out a volunteer signup, so please be on the lookout for that. Athletes will race around the lake pieces in the morning and 2ks in the afternoon. Racing will begin at 10am and end by 3pm, so athletes should plan on potentially being at the boathouse from around 8:30am until 3pm. All programs will be off Sunday. Important: if you are taking the SAT or cannot make the race Saturday, please fill out the absence form and tell your coach ASAP!
A few last reminders – the novice season ends Friday November 9 and the Varsity ends Friday November 16. There will be a blog post with winter information in the coming week. Also, there is a service day for varsity athletes on Saturday, November 10 from 9:30am-12pm. We will meet at the Marina on the south side of the lake. More information will come from the coaches.
Thank you and Go Mercer!

Head of the Schuylkill Information – PLEASE READ

Good afternoon, Mercer Parents,

Below you will find some additional information about tomorrow’s regatta:

Drop-off/Pick-up:  The Head of the Schuylkill is technically an away regatta, but parents and athletes are required to get themselves to the course.  Please have the athletes at the trailer TWO HOURS before the scheduled race time.  The trailer is located at Trailer Lot 4, which is marked on the map: http://hosr.org/site-map/

Parking/Spectator Information:  Philadelphia is closing down Kelly Drive for this regatta.  Therefore, you will need to adjust your timing to allow for extra traffic for drop off and pick up.  There is parking up the hill from the course, and there will be a shuttle running back and forth, stopping at Lot 4 where the Mercer trailer is located.  Parents can refer to the Parents’ FB page for additional information about where to watch, but there is a covered grandstand farther down the course from the drop off site.  The trailer zone is for coaches and athletes only, so please respect that space and cheer farther down the course.

Racing:  This is a head race.  That means the boats are coming down the course one at a time, with about 15 seconds separating them, rather than spread across in lanes.  The racing schedule with bow numbers will be posted on the Parents’ FB page, so you will know which boats to look for.  Once the racing is over, please wait until you hear from your athlete before you pick him/her up.  The athletes will need to de-rig the boats and load them back on the trailer before they are allowed to leave, which does take some time.  The coaches ask that you not hang around the trailers while the athletes are working, but rather wait until you hear from them.

Miscellaneous:  The Head of the Schuylkill is a large regatta, with many clubs competing in events throughout the day.  There will be a lot of exciting racing, but it will also be very crowded.  Please pack some food, water, and extra gear for your athletes!  There are some vendors at the course, but it’s best to come prepared.

Good luck to all the rowers tomorrow!

Head of the Schuylkill 2018

10:19am Women’s Youth 8+ (both entries) Bow# 4 and Bow# 12
12:57pm Men’s Youth 8+ Bow# 19

Travel Plans:
We are departing from the boathouse at 5:30 am Friday, October 19.  Athletes should arrive at the boathouse 15 minutes early, packed and ready to leave.  They should also bring snacks and water, but the plan is to have lunch on the road.  We will drive directly to the course so the athletes can rig the boats and get in a practice row.  We will be returning to the boathouse on Sunday, October 21, some time in the evening.

We will be traveling in 3 vans. There will be a chaperone assigned to each boat competing at the event.

The cost for this regatta is higher than it is for most other regattas.  This is in large part due to the costs associated with traveling to Boston this weekend; the Head of the Charles is a prestigious regatta that hosts clubs and teams at all levels from all over the world.

The registration link for the Head of the Charles is here.  Please register as soon as possible!

We will provide updates on ETA’s, as well as results, on Facebook.  We will do what we can to post on the blog as well, but please use Facebook as your primary source of information.  If you are watching from home, results will also be posted on www.RegattaCentral.com.  You can also follow via livestream from the event website www.hocr.org.
