WINTER 2017-2018 SEASON

Varsity Winter Program

The Varsity Winter Training Season will run from November 27, 2017 to March 3rd, 2018.

Winter varsity training includes both boathouse practice and strength training. Over the past four years, the juniors have worked with physical therapist and collegiate rower Kaitlin Jackson (see bio below) to supplement the aerobic training we do throughout the winter with endurance strength training. This year we will again be working with Kaitlin, this time in space provided by CrossFit Hamilton. While our sessions will be held in a CrossFit gym, this program is not CrossFit but instead is one that has been specifically designed and tailored by Kaitlin for rowers. Every exercise the group does will simulate/reinforce the movement patterns we use to move the boat and each session will include dynamic warm-ups and post-workout stretching.  While the coaches believe this training really helps with the development of the rower, the program is completely optional and operates independently of the Mercer Rowing. The CrossFit gym is located at 2101 E State St, Hamilton, NJ  08610.

 Winter Training Schedule

Girls Varsity:  This year the girls team will have the later training slot, from 5:30-7:45 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays (3:45-5:45 pm), and Fridays.  CrossFit begins on November 15 and will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30–8:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 7:30–9:00 am.

NOVICE PARENTS ATTENDING HOSR

Your rowers should have brought home a handout from Coaches Amanda and Zach that outline details for tomorrow’s racing at HOSR. Please give yourselves plenty of time to get your rower to the course. Kelly Drive will be shut down so rowers will have to be dropped off and walk down (or pick up the shuttles that will be running) to the trailer, which is located at trailer parking area 5. Per the note from the coaches please go to hosr.org to find maps of the parking and traffic patterns. In light of the potential for adverse weather, the PNRA tent may be used to shelter the rowers so Mercer parents will be congregating in our usual spot just north of the grandstand if it is not raining or at the grandstand (where there is plenty of cover from the weather) if it is raining. Lightning or high winds could prompt delays or schedule changes so we will do our best to keep everyone advised via the FB page. You can reach me, Jeb Barkenbush, via phone or text at 609 712 3036 if you have any questions. GO MERCER!!!

10/24/17 Practice Update

Hello, Mercer Parents and Athletes,

Due to forecasted Thunderstorms and high winds, Varsity practice is canceled for today. Novice practice will have land training due to their race this weekend. Varsity Development is also canceled.

Also, Please let your coached know if you can’t attend the Head of the Halloween this weekend.

Head of The Charles Trip Information

Hello, Mercer Varsity Athletes and Parents,

We are looking forward to the second regatta of the season.  The Head of the Charles (www.hocr.org) is a Varsity-only regatta scheduled for Sunday, October 22, in Boston, MA.  This regatta is by invitation only, and this year we are sending the Boys V8, the Girls V8 and 2V8, the Men’s Masters 4+, and the Women’s Masters 4+.  The coaches have posted the lineups.  The current tentative schedule is as follows:

Saturday:
10:29am Men’s Senior Masters 4+
10:47am Women’s Senior Masters 4+

Sunday:
10:06am Women’s Youth 8+ (both entries)
12:45pm Men’s Youth 8+

Travel Plans:
We are departing from the boathouse at 5:30 am Friday, October 20.  Athletes should arrive at the boathouse packed and ready to leave.  They should also bring snacks and water, but the plan is to have lunch on the road.  We will drive directly to the course so the athletes can rig the boats and get in a practice row.  We will be returning to the boathouse on Sunday, October 22, some time in the evening.

We will be traveling in 3 vans, with 4 chaperones (an extra one to be at the course with the athletes while the vans are being parked offsite).  There will be a chaperone assigned to each boat competing at the event.

The cost for this regatta is higher than it is for most other regattas.  This is in large part due to the costs associated with traveling to Boston this weekend; the Head of the Charles is a prestigious regatta that hosts clubs and teams at all levels from all over the world.

The registration link for the Head of the Charles is here.  If you have not yet filled out and signed a Travel Guidelines and Expectations form, please do so and have your athlete return the form to his/her coach by Monday, October 16th.  The link for the form is  here..

We will provide updates on ETA’s, as well as results, on Facebook.  We will do what we can to post on the blog as well, but please use Facebook as your primary source of information.  If you are watching from home, results will also be posted on www.RegattaCentral.com.  You can also follow via livestream from the event website www.hocr.org.

Hotel Details:

PNRA has secured rooms at the Boston Marriott Newton, 2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA  02466 for athletes and coaches.

Meals:

The following meals will be provided:

Lunch Friday, October 20
Dinner Friday, October 20 (choice by boat)
Breakfast Saturday, October 21 (full breakfast at the Hotel)
Dinner Saturday, October 21 (Bertucci’s, an annual tradition)
Breakfast Sunday, October 22 (full breakfast at the Hotel)
Lunch Sunday (at the course)
NOTE: Lunch on Saturday will be at the course.  Athletes will purchase their own.
Dinner on Sunday will be by boat on the way home.  Athletes will purchase their own.
*****  Please have your athlete bring cash for snacks, meals, and event gear.  *****

Coaches’ Travel Note:
The Head of Charles is a unique event.  It is very hard to obtain an entry through the open lottery system.  The only way to avoid the lottery and guarantee an entry for the next year is to finish in the top half of your event.  In 2017, for the third time in the history of the club, Mercer has three guaranteed entries.  The second unique aspect of the Charles is that it is an incredibly difficult course to navigate for a coxswain.  There are a couple of extreme turns, six bridges, and many boats to pass along the way.  Therefore, we want to make sure our coxswains are prepared.  We want to ensure that we have best possible chance of finishing in the top half of each race, so future Mercer rowers have the opportunity to participate at this great event.  We believe it is crucial for us to have the ability to get athletes out on the course for a row on Friday, and have our coxswains attend the coxswains clinic on Saturday, as it will help them be relaxed and prepared for the race on Sunday.

A huge thank you again to everyone who has offered to help.  We look forward to another successful regatta.

September Wrap-up and October Outlook

Hello Mercer families and friends!

With September in the rearview, our teams are turning their attention to the races ahead in October. This weekend will mark the beginning of head race season with 5 varsity boats competing at Head of the Housatonic, in Connecticut. More information about this race has been posted in a previous blog post. Many of our upperclassmen have been taking official visits to colleges, and we look forward to seeing where our seniors will be going next fall!

Our novice squads have been amping up their workouts and completing rigorous erg testing. The novice girls completed a 4k last week and the novice boys finished a 5k last Thursday, not an easy feat! Coach Amanda and Zach are very impressed with the progress they’ve  seen in the novice so far and are looking forward to racing.

Our 8th graders are getting comfortable in the barge and in the octuple, hammering away at both sweeping and sculling. The 8th graders will be participating in the Head of the Halloween, so start working on costumes that won’t get stuck in the sliding boat seats!

Our Masters program gained four new rowers this fall after successful summer Learn to Scull programs. The men’s 4+, women’s 8+, and 4+ will be racing at the Head of the Housatonic this weekend and looking to improve their strong finishes from last year. Their sites are also set on their men’s and women’s 4+s that will be competing at the Head of the Charles, with our men receiving a last-minute bid that they will hope to defend for next year. The women’s 4+ secured a bid last year by less than .2 seconds, so you can imagine how tough this race can be and the excitement over a great finish!

We have lots of events coming up in October:

October 4th @ 6:30 PM- College Night!

  • Hilary Gehman will provide athletes with a roadmap to rowing in college. Although this event is geared toward juniors, all grades are welcome to attend.

October 6-7th– Head of the Housatonic

  • 3 girls varsity and 2 boys varsity boats will compete at this increasingly popular head race in Shelton, CT. Lineups will be posted after practice today, October, 2nd.

October 7-8th– Small Boat Challenge

  • A great opportunity to volunteer and see the sport up close! This race is open to collegiate, juniors, and masters rowers.

October 14th @ 6 PM- Octoberfest

  • This 21+ event is a great way to mingle with other Mercer families, dinner provided. Tickets can be bought here:

October 20-22nd– Head of the Charles Regatta

  • One of largest race in America, held annually in Boston, is the premier head race for rowers of all ages. 2 girls 8+s, a boys 8+, and a women’s masters 4+ will compete at this exciting venue where only the top half of boats in each event have a secure spot for next year’s race.

October 28th @ 10 AM to 1 PM- Head of the Halloween

  • This intra-squad race will mix up athletes from every team as they complete an “Around the Lake” course on Mercer Lake. Costumes are encouraged and snacks will be provided after racing.

October 29th– Head of the Schuylkill

  • Masters and Novice rowers (selected boats will be announced) will compete in this head race in Philadelphia. This is a great event for spectators and will give the novice boats their first taste of competition.

Thanks for reading!

Tuesday and Wednesday Practice

Due to the weather predicted for tomorrow, Tuesday, September 19 and Wednesday, September 20th. We might have to cancel practice for the novice groups. Please be on the lookout for an update via 313131. Please sign up for the text alert by texting PNRA to 313131.

Week 1 Review

Hello Mercer families and friends,

The boathouse is lively with all our programs back in full swing! The varsity teams had their first ever try out period with over 100 rowers participating in the two-week process. This surge of rowers is a great sign for future depth on the varsity side of the program. They now have their sites set on the Head of the Housatonic and the Head of the Charles coming up in October.

The novice program was split into the novice team and an 8th grade development program. This division will be important in teaching technical skill and time management to the younger 8th grade athletes. By giving them additional time in the sport at a lower intensity, we can foster not only good technique, but also a love of the sport.

The novice athletes, now consisting of 9th graders and above, are off and running! Both the boys and girls teams have about 30 athletes and a shiny new ‘barge’ to practice with. The barge was purchased from Peddie and is an incredibly useful tool for coaches and rowers alike. This extra-wide boat allows 12 rowers to practice their stroke in a much more stable environment. A coach can walk down the middle of the barge and help correct technique in a more hands on way, which makes getting into the racing shells more comfortable for the novice. We love it!

Our novice and varsity teams were given a special opportunity last week, the National team’s nutritionist, Liz Fusco, spoke with the athletes on proper nutrition and hydration. She gave an hour-long talk focusing on how to hydrate, recover, and replenish muscles for a more successful workout. This information is invaluable to our growing athletes, and many have started making healthy changes to their pre-workout diet (hint: simple carbohydrates, protein and water!). Recovery Fact Sheet 2015

We had varsity and novice parent meetings over the last two weekends, so if you missed your team’s meeting we have attached the handouts in a prior blog post. Thank you to all the parents for coming out and learning about your son/daughter’s sport!
