Novice and Varsity Write Up, Week 2 and 4:
The weather was not on our sides this week. Wind and rain can be challenging for varsity rowers and unsafe for novice, but we did our best!
The varsity boys and girls had test pieces this week, longer distances are not only physically challenging but mentally taxing. Long distance pieces help build a strong cardio base that the rest of the year is built on; think of it as the bottom of a pyramid, with winter and spring riding on top. With their first race coming up the coaches are testing out boat line-ups but the selection process is not just a test piece, it’s every stroke of every day.
The novice are working harder and getting tougher! With the water not always safe for our boats to row in, we had to shift our practices to land. We had the first Loop Run: 5 miles, mixed groups of 8 rowers, and no one can be left behind. Even novice need to build their strong base! We also worked on erging technique and lifting. Novice are always learning, and the progress so far has been awesome!
