Rowers representing the Mercer Masters Program traveled to St. Catharines, ONT, Canada to row in the September 2-5, 2010 FISA World Masters Regatta. The Mercer Masters joined approximately 3,000 rowers from 34 countries to compete on the the Canadian Royal Henley Race course. The FISA Masters Regatta annually draws some of the best Masters rowers from around the world to compete against each other. Rowers are divided into letter designated age groups for racing.
Racing in the third event of the regatta on Thursday, Sept 1, the Women's D, Susan Vorhees, Cheryl Baldino, Kathy Kalinowski, Judy Gorberg and coxswain Maddie Alden found themselves in second place after Western Reserve Rowing Association jumped to an early lead. Canada's Don Rowing and Sarasota Crew both challenged the Mercer Boat in the middle of the 1000 meter race but the Mercer rowers held them off and finished strong to take second place in the event.
In the Women's C eight raced on Friday, the Mercer Masters boat finished in seventh place in their event. The boat was composed of Cheryl Baldino, Kathy Kalinowski, Christina Jordan, Cassandra Cohen, Susan Vorhees, Deb Mara, Miranda Robison, Carin Dillie and Maddie Alden.
After taking the water on Saturday Mercer's two C category Women's four with coxswain were called back to the docks when racing was cancelled due to high winds making the Course unrowable. "We were so ready to race," stated Cheryl Baldino. "While we understand the why the races were canceled, we really wanted to race again."
The Mercer Masters Program is sponsored by the Princeton National Rowing Association. The program rowers out of the Caspersen Rowing Center on Lake Mercer in Mercer County Park, West Windsor, NJ. The program is open to men and women of all ages and skill levels.
